Meet the CFO

Hi, I’m Carlo Woods. I began my career in financial services at Merrill Lynch and Goldman Sachs, but I found my passion helping visionary founders turn bold ideas into scalable businesses. Over the last 15+ years, I’ve served as a trusted partner to CEOs across sectors, from SaaS and consumer tech to climate and hard tech, navigating nearly every stage of growth, business model, and exit path.

I’ve led finance at high-growth companies like SolarCity and Postmates, and helped build from the ground up at Cruz Foam and AMS. Along the way, I’ve raised hundreds of millions in capital, built GAAP-compliant finance functions, scaled operations, and developed frameworks that translate complexity into clarity.

Whether it’s capital strategy, operational efficiency, or unlocking new growth levers, I bring sharp financial discipline, creative problem solving, and a deep respect for the entrepreneurial journey. My goal is simple… to help great teams move faster, smarter, and with more confidence.

Experience

Cruz Foam

At Cruz Foam, a circular materials startup, Carlo was instrumental in securing funding and scaling operations from prototype to commercial launch. He built the company’s long-term financial model, stood up the accounting team, and established core people ops and legal infrastructure. Carlo also developed performance metrics to drive go-to-market success and led key partnership negotiations. His leadership helped Cruz Foam navigate complex investor dynamics and position itself as a standout in the climate tech space.

Postmates

At Postmates, a fast-scaling delivery marketplace, Carlo built the finance and accounting function from the ground up as the company grew from $50M to $200M in revenue.  He built and led the team that implemented a new EPR, brought the company into GAAP compliance, and completed its first Big 4 audit in 18 months.  His leadership laid the financial foundation for IPO readiness and continued expansion during a period of explosive growth before the company was acquired by Uber.

Modsy

At Modsy, a venture-backed interior design tech platform, Carlo led financial operations during a period of rapid transformation. He helped accelerate the company from flat to 90% year-over-year growth, introduced creative operational models to improve efficiency and margin, and partnered closely with the CEO on multiple fundraising rounds and M&A negotiations. His strategic oversight was key to Modsy’s growth trajectory and the acquisition of its IP and team by Lennar.

SolarCity

At SolarCity, Carlo led FP&A and treasury during a period of hypergrowth for one of the most capital-intensive businesses in cleantech. Over his 5-year tenure, he raised more than $600M in corporate debt and equity, partnered with the CFO and technical teams on S-1 prep ahead of the IPO, and led financial diligence for several strategic acquisitions post-listing. His work helped scale the company’s financial engine during one of the most complex and dynamic phases in its history before the company was acquired by Tesla.

AMS

At AMS, a battery storage pioneer turned SaaS provider for energy asset owners, Carlo led a comprehensive restructuring of business operations and guided the strategic sale of its AI-driven energy bidding platform. Working closely with the Board and major shareholders, he navigated the complexities of the transaction while preserving the core team and IP, ultimately contributing to a successful IPO for Fluence post-acquisition.

More about Carlo

When I’m not building a financial model or helping startups scale, I’m usually off the grid with my wife and two boys, seeing friends around the Bay Area, relaxing at a faraway beach, or chasing powder in the Sierras. Fatherhood keeps me humble, curious, and constantly learning, traits I try to bring to every company I work with. Life’s better with a little balance, a lot of adventure, and a great spreadsheet.
